Temples that have been built in preexisting buildings
The following temples have been built in buildings that previously existed in other capacities.
- Vernal Utah Temple — This temple was dedicated in 1997, and the building that is now the temple was previously the Vernal Tabernacle.
- Copenhagen Denmark Temple — This temple was dedicated in 2004. The temple is a total renovation of the neoclassical Priorvej chapel, which was built in 1931 and dedicated by Elder John A. Widtsoe of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The interior was completely gutted, leaving the exterior and a few carefully reproduced portions of the interior as reminders of the original chapel.
- Manhattan New York Temple — The Manhattan New York Temple was the third temple built from an existing building. It was dedicated in 2004 by President Gordon B. Hinckley. The temple is virtually a building within a building, which is completely soundproofed from the hustle and bustle of New York City. The original building was a multipurpose stake center built in 1976.
- Provo City Center Temple — This temple was dedicated in 2016. It was built from the shell of the Provo City Tabernacle, which was destroyed by fire in December of 2010.
