Things I have learned since joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by Jim Young

Things I have learned, by Jim Young, March 2001 — some whimsical, some profound, some prophetic, but all are true!

  18. The Garden of Eden is in Missouri.  (Joseph Smith)
  19. Angels do not have nor do they need wings.
  20. There is not in existence any original manuscripts from which the Bible was translated, so why do we struggle over the validity and vicinity of gold plates?  It requires as much faith to believe in the one as in the other.

  22. There is life after fasting.
  23. Bread cast on water always comes back to you.  (Be generous in your fast offerings)
  24. Crosses are symbols of the dead Christ.  We worship the living Christ.  If anything, it is the empty tomb that is our symbol and the source of our hope.  (Our lives, well lived, are the best symbol)
  25. We are a restored church, not a reorganized one.  The original is good enough for me.
  26. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written, every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written.  (John the Beloved)

  47. Earth was once a heaven and will be again.
  48. There is gender inequality in the Church.  I have to hold the priesthood to enter the temple, but women do not.  Go figure!  (Note: if Mary Fielding Smith, widow of Hyrum, mother of Joseph F. and grandmother of Joseph Fielding, could bury her murdered husband, have faith sufficient to follow an unschooled carpenter from Vermont, walk with her children 2000 miles across the most rugged terrain and awful conditions on this continent, anoint, lay hands on and heal a dying ox, and live on to see this desert blossom as a rose, is anything impossible for you?)
