Operation On Target 2013 — Announcement and general information

Important dates for Operation On Target and the Kickoff Workshop

Traditionally, Operation On Target is held on the third Saturday in July every year. We also have the tradition of hosting an On Target Kickoff Workshop on the third Saturday of May also. Units from any scout district in Utah are welcome to attend the workshop.  The two months between the workshop and the actual event will give scouts and their leaders sufficient time to construct mirrors and recruit a ham radio operator if desired. Attendance at the workshop is very helpful to those leaders, both adults and youth, who have not participated in On Target previously. At the workshop, scouts and scouters can learn about every aspect of On Target and how to make it a marvelous experience for their units. Everything from mirror-making to mountain-top experiences will be covered.

In 2013, we will be celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the close association of the Boy Scouts of America with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Our On Target event will highlight this celebration.  Our signaling will focus on the temples located in our areas.  I am spearheading the effort in Utah County, and we will have scouting and church dignitaries stationed near the four temple sites in Utah County (Mount Timpanogos Temple, Provo Temple, Provo City Center Temple, and the Payson Temple).  There will be scouts, leaders, and a ham operator at each temple site to receive and send the mirror signals from those of us on the peaks.  A dignitary at one of the temple sites will share a message with all of us on the peaks via ham radio.  Be sure to pick a peak which will give you a view of at least one of the temples.  I am hoping that other leaders will step forward in other valleys to coordinate this “Temple To Peak” celebration.

On Target Dates for 2013
• On Target Kickoff Workshop — Saturday, May 18,  2013 from 9:00 – 10:00 am, Grandview Stake Center, Provo, Utah, 1600 North 1880 West, Grandview Hill
Operation On Target Day —  Saturday, July 20, 2013 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm, Mountain peaks throughout the western United States

Additional notes:

  • The purpose of the Kickoff Workshop is to teach the leaders of units about On Target. They will in turn go back and teach On Target to the boys in the units, construct mirrors, and make preparations for the activity.
  • The official signaling time on the day of On Target is from 10 am to 1 pm, but signaling can and will occur both before and after this time block.
  • It is suggested that units make this an overnight camp by hiking part-way up the mountain on Friday afternoon and evening, and then continuing on up to the summit on the Saturday morning.

Listed below are the names of the wonderful people who will be serving on the ON TARGET 2013 committee for the Utah National Parks Council.  I am so appreciative of their dedicated service.  Others will be added as they join our committee.  Email committee members with any questions about their areas of expertise, or to say thanks.  The committee members are Neil Bennett (southern Utah), Ken Cluff (Varsity Vision), Susan Taylor (Mystery Station), and myself (Committee chairman).
