Gestational Thrombocytopenia
• Incidental GT of pregnancy
• Defined by:
. – Mild, asymptomatic GT
. – No past history of GT
. – Occurrence during late gestation
. – No association with fetal GT
. – Spontaneous resolution after delivery
• Platelet counts are usually above 70,000
• It occurs in about 5% of pregnancies
• It is similar to mild ITP, suggesting an immunologic etiology
• Preeclampsia should be considered
• Epidurals are safe if platelets > 50,000 to 70,000
• Consider Decadron, 8-pack of platelets, then epidural
