Calculations and miscellaneous facts

• Formula for the average weight of a child:  (age x 2) + 9 = the 50th percentile weight of a child in kilograms (up to age 14)
• For newborns: the average newborn is 3 kg; add 0.5 kg for each month up to age 1
• Operating room ventilation with laminar airflow showed no benefit and was associated with a significantly higher risk for severe surgical site infections after hip prosthesis surgery
• kilograms = (pounds / 2) – (10% of pounds / 2)
• pounds = (kilograms x 2) + (10% of kilograms x 2)
• IBW (ideal body weight) = (height in centimeters) – 100
• BMI (body mass index) = kilograms / ((height in meters) ^ 2 )
• BMI > 30 is considered morbid obesity
• IBW x 2 = morbid obesity
• (Glucose – 200) / 10 = units of subcutaneous regular insulin
• Racemic epinephrine for croup = 0.3 ml in 4.7 ml of saline
• 1:200,000 = 1 mg in 200 ml solution = 5 mcg per ml
• 0.75% solution = 7.5 mg per ml
• Endotracheal tube sizes = (age / 4) + 4
• Fahrenheit degrees = ((9 / 5) x centigrade degrees) + 32
