The Liahona — and modern-day liahonas

Presentation to missionaries

Missionary presentation by Elder Michael Taylor

  • The Liahona in the Book of Mormon was an amazing instrument and tool!
    • The Lord obviously loved and was aware of Lehi and his family.
    • Who would have crafted the Liahona, and where?
    • The Lord wanted Lehi and his family to succeed in their journey and not wander in the wilderness.
  • The Lord loves us, too, and wants us to succeed in our ‘journey’ and not wander.
    • He has given us modern-day liahonas.
    • Can any of you describe modern-day liahonas in your lives?  Why do you consider these ‘liahonas’?
      • PATRIARCHAL BLESSINGS
        • Patriarchal blessings, when moved upon by the spirit, can be an inspired and prophetic statement of the life mission of the recipient.  Together with such blessings, cautions and admonitions may also be given for the accomplishment of such life’s mission.
        • It is so amazing how personal a patriarchal blessing is!
        • How does the fulfillment of promised blessings in a patriarchal blessing compare to how the Liahona worked for Lehi and his family?
        • Promised blessings in a patriarchal blessing are conditioned upon faithfulness to the gospel and our worthiness in keeping the commandments.
      • FOR THE STRENGTH OF YOUTH booklet
        • This booklet is written today for you and your specific challenges and temptations of today.  It is what the Lord knows you need to know and hear to be prepared to face the world you live in today.
        • Review the First Presidency Message found at the beginning of the booklet and carefully consider the message.
      • SCRIPTURES
        • How important are the scriptures to the Lord?
        • They are so important that He sent Nephi and his brothers back to Laban to get he plates of brass and other scriptures.  They risked their lives and personal safety.  The Lord even commanded Nephi to slay Laban so that they could get the scriptures.
        • Please read Alma 37:35.
        • Why are they so important?  They can guide, direct, and inspire us.
        • Read Alma 37:44-45
      • PARENTS AND FAMILY
        • Why and how can parents and family be liahonas?
        • Aren’t all parents old-fashioned and out of touch with what’s going on today?
        • Aren’t younger brothers and sisters just an annoyance?
        • The older I get the more I realize how smart my parents were.
        • Parents always want the best for their children.  They love us more than anyone else except our Heavenly Father.
        • They have been down the road a bit longer and farther than you.
        • They don’t want you to have to make the same mistakes they have made.
