Scriptural nuggets — Hawera District Meeting presentation

Scriptural nuggets, Hawera District Meeting, August 11, 2015, by Elder Michael Taylor

1/ Design or coincidence?  2 Nephi 9:39, 2 Nephi 12:2, Mosiah 18:30, Alma 36:21

2/ Scripture joke: The Lord is a surgeon?  2 Nephi 15:12       Engravo: Mosiah 2:31

3/ Church history quiz: Among our 106 latter-day apostles, what is the most-common last name?  The second most-common? Third?

4/ Internal evidence of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon:

  • It took the prophet Joseph less than 3 months to translate the Book of Mormon.
  • He was essentially an unschooled farmboy, with very limited knowledge of the world.
  • He wrote in detail about life in the Holy Lands and in ancient America.
  • Consider Jacob 5 alone — how much would Joseph have known about vineyards, olive groves, cultivating these trees, grafting, nurturing, transplanting, etc.
  • Elephants, cement, steel, etc.?
  • James Michener, the prolific author of more than 40 historical novels, would often take 2 to 3 years just to study the historical background of the areas about which he wrote.
  • The scribes of the Book of Mormon testified that not one single time did Joseph ask to have anything repeated as he would resume translating.
  • Alma 34:37-41:  could Joseph Smith have written these words?
  • “No deceitful man could have written the Book of Mormon; no righteous man would have tried.”

5/ The Lord’s “work” is described in Moses 1:39.  Do you know where OUR “work” is clearly defined?  ______________________

6/ Joseph Fielding Smith had two “favorite” scriptures:  1 John 3:2 and D&C 50:24.

7/ “Mission Statements” of the Godhead and also of US!

  • The Father: Moses 1:39
  • The Son: 3 Nephi 27:13
  • The Holy Ghost: John 16:13-15
  • US: D&C 138:56

8/ Five verses to lift any burden ( my “Refiners’ Fire” chain)
