Discussion thoughts and promptings

Moses and the Red Sea — Exodus 14 — Provo Missionary Training Center:

  • Exodus 14:8: how could it be that the pharaoh would pursue the children of Israel after all that had recently transpired in Egypt, including the death of his first-born son?  How hard can a heart be?
  • Exodus 14:11-12: After all they had witnessed in Egypt, how could the children of Israel still doubt that the Lord would preserve and protect them?  They were spiritually weak and very rebellious, and miracles don’t convert!
  • Exodus 14:13: What does this incredible response tell us about Moses’ character?  What would a “natural man” have said?
  • Exodus 14:19 and 22: Three miracles – the cloud, the parting, and the dry sea bed
  • Exodus 14:23: If you were an Egyptian foot soldier, remembering the recent past in Egypt, how anxious would you be to venture out into the sea?  They went because they were obedient.  Is that the type of obedience we refer to here at the MTC?  Have to vs. want to.
  • Exodus 14:21 and 27: It appears that the water was parted for about 36 hours!  Imagine how the Lord was able to control the wind.  How is it that the wind didn’t make it impossible for the children of Israel to pass through?
  • Doctrine and Covenants 8:2-3   It was by the spirit of revelation that Moses led the children of Israel through the Red Sea.  What role did ‘revelation’ play in what transpired?  What was revealed to Moses?  What role with revelation play in the work you are about to do?  Are there some ‘Red Seas’ that will need to be divided in your work?
