Companionship relations — quote from Brigham Young

A wonderful quote from Brigham Young concerning elders and companion relations:

“The speech and conduct of elders, one towards another, is frequently wrong; one elder will speak evil of another; and while you undertake to trample on others, you will sink yourself.  …If [a mans’] feelings are elevated, he will build up others and build up himself.  Just as sure as an elder tries to build himself up by the destruction of another, he will sink himself.”

Pertinent scriptures:

  • Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 — “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor.  For it they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.”
  • Ephesians 4:29-32 — “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers…Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking be put away from  you, with all malice, and be ye kind one to another, tender hearted, forgiving one another…”
  • Doctrine and Covenants 38:27 — “…I say unto you, be one; and if ye are not one ye are not mine.”
  • Doctrine and Covenants 108:7 — “…strengthen your brethren in all your conversations, in all your prayers, in all your exhortations, and in all your doings.”
