“I am a Cougar Fan, sir…”
Sometime in the decade of the 1980’s, I had a flash of inspiration. Pure revelation enveloped me as new words to the Utah Fight Song came into my mind and soul. I quickly grabbed a pen and paper, and wrote the inspired words that filled my mind. The following words are to be sung to the tune of the Utah Fight Song entitled “I am a Utah Man, sir…”. All appropriate copyright laws pertain to these words and their use. :o)
“I am a Cougar fan, sir, and I love the BYU,
My colors are not red and white, oh no, they’re white and blue.
The Cougars are the best and finest you will ever see,
If I were you I’d cheer for BYU along with me.
Chorus:
A Cougar fan, sir, a Cougar fan am I,
A Cougar fan, sir, true Cougars never die.
The Utes are an anemic group, they very seldom win,
And if they do it’s ‘cuz the refs have done the other team in.
The Cougars, on the other hand, a bold and noble crew,
They live the Gospel, preach the truth, in short, they’re true and blue.
Chorus:
A Cougar fan, sir, a Cougar fan am I,
A Cougar fan, sir, true Cougars never die.
I’ve often heard the Utah fans say they detest the Y,
But that’s like hating mom, the flag, or even apple pie.
We Cougars rise above whatever insults come our way,
We’re sons of Brigham, we love our school, on humble knees we pray.
Chorus:
A Cougar fan, sir, a Cougar fan am I,
A Cougar fan, sir, true Cougars never die.
We appreciate the tithing paid by all you Utah fans,
You support our teams, you build our school, while you remain as ‘also-rans’.
Some day you’ll see the folly of cheering for the red and white,
You’ll join our cause, you’ll wear the blue, you’ll truly see the light.
Chorus:
A Cougar fan, sir, a Cougar fan am I,
A Cougar fan, sir, true Cougars never die.”
