Nine-year old Jimmie was sitting at his school desk one day, when all of a sudden, there was a puddle between his feet and the front of his pants was soaking wet. When he realized what had happened, he thought his heart was going to stop! He had no idea how this accident had happened. It had never happened before, and he knew that the boys in his class would tease him mercilessly. He also knew the girls would never speak to him again if they found out. He put his head down and uttered a frantic prayer: “Dear God, this is an emergency! I need help now!”
As Jimmie looked up from his prayer, he saw his teacher approaching his desk. He knew she had discovered his problem, and that he was about to be humiliated in front of his class. Just at that exact moment, a classmate named Susie approached his desk carrying the class goldfish bowl. Susie stumbled and dumped the entire fishbowl, with all its contents, right in Jimmie”s lap. He pretended to be angry, but offered a quick prayer saying, “Thank you, Lord, thank you!”
Now, instead of being the object of ridicule, Jimmie became the object of sympathy. The teacher rushed Jimmie to the lavatory, gave him dry pants to put on,
and apologized for the embarrassment Susie had caused him. All the other students in the class rushed to clean up the spilled water. Life was now wonderful for Jimmie. Unfortunately, however, the scorn that would have been heaped on Jimmie was now being heaped on Susie. When she tried to help, the other students that she had done quite enough.
At the end of the day, Jimmie saw Susie waiting for the bus. He approached her and said, “You spilled that water on me on purpose, didn’t you?” Susie whispered back, “Yes, I did. I knew you needed help. I wet my pants in class once too!”
May the Lord help us to see the opportunities that are always around us to do good and to lend a hand.
