Two Horses

Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it.  From a distance, each looks like any other horse.  If you stop your car, however, or are walking by the pasture, you will notice something quite amazing.  Looking into the eyes of one of the two horses will disclose that the horse is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him.

This alone is amazing, but there is something more amazing about these two horses.  If you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell.  The source of the ringing bell comes from the other, smaller horse in the field.  Attached to her halter is a small bell.  This bell tells the blind horse where the smaller horse is, so he can follow her.

As you stand and watch these two friends, you’ll see how the smaller horse is always checking on the blind horse, and that the blind horse will listen for the sound of the bell and stay very close to his friend, trusting that she will not lead him astray.  When the smaller horse returns to the barn each evening, she stops occasionally and looks back, making sure her friend isn’t too far behind to hear the bell.

Like the owner of these horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges.  He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need. Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by the ringing bell of those God places in our lives.  At other times we are the guide horse, helping others see.

Good friends are like this — we don’t always see them, but we know they are always there. Always be kinder than is necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.  Listen for my bell, and I will listen for yours.
