—  Susan’s parents, Glen and Marva Rudd —  October 1980 —

Barbara, Susan’s older sister, asked all of us in the Rudd family to share an experience with or memory of Glen and Marva.  She was going to compile these remembrances and present them to her parents.  I shared the impressions and feelings I had when I first met Susan’s parents.  These feelings have been reinforced and strengthened on many occasions.

“I first met Susan in October of 1980, and was thrilled when she accepted my first invitation for a date.  I came to 1945 Lambourne Avenue to pick up Susan on a Sunday evening, and I was nervous because Susan had warned me that her entire extended family would probably be there.  Her prediction was accurate, as all of the Rudd brothers and sisters were there, with their children.  I dutifully shook every hand and exchanged niceties, trying to present some degree of composure and sociability.  My apprehension was soon replaced by the incredible spirit of love and harmony that was present in the home.  The reason for this wonderful spirit became apparent as I finally met Glen L. and Marva Rudd, Susan’s parents.  I knew immediately that I was in the presence of a very special couple.  They were, of course, gracious and accepting, but the spirit they radiated was much more than just courtesy extended to a new acquaintance.  It was a spirit borne of righteousness, Christ-like love, and charity.  I recognized that this was a home wherein the Spirit dwelt.  I also quickly realized that of the many reasons why I was so attracted to Susan, one of them was that she was a product of this righteous home and parents, having basked in this spirit her entire life.  The feelings I had on that initial encounter with the Rudds have only been reinforced and re-confirmed over the years.  Both they and their home represent all that is good about the gospel, the Spirit, and our Savior’s love.  I feel blessed to be a part of this family, led by a righteous patriarch and a loving matriarch, Glen L. and Marva Sperry Rudd.”
