— Dating at its worst — January 1979 —
I had a unique dating experience in January of 1978, during my second year as a medical student. I am glad that I can laugh about this experience now that several years have elapsed. I was lined up with a friend of a friend. She turned out to be a nursing student and she was quite attractive. We went to a basketball game and on the way home, she made the following comments: “The only reason I went out with you is because my friend said you gave a great talk in South Bend, Indiana on the Hill Cumorah pageant trip, and I want you to give it to me.” “Dating is such a joke; I can’t stand to date.” When I asked her if she had a viable alternative to dating, she said, “Yes, I just refuse to date.” When I asked her why she felt that way about dating, she said, “I have thousands of reasons but I am not going to tell you because I don’t want you to hate me all at once.” She also said, “If I do accept a date, I usually date a guy for 2 or 3 weeks, and if he continues to call after that I tell him to get lost.” When asked if she had ever considered working in a doctor’s office rather than in a hospital, she responded, “Absolutely not! All doctors that I have met are egotistical snobs, and I could never work closely with one in an office setting.” She went on to say, “And medical students are much worse that doctors!” I couldn’t get that young lady home fast enough. For her swan song, she told me that she hated Brigham Young University as well. The only pleasure I derived from the evening was in the fact that I did not give her my Hill Cumorah talk.
