Youth service project — 1991
We had a wonderful experience at our youth summer activity in August, which consisted of traveling to Fairview, to the farm of a member of our ward and doing service projects for three widows. I was assigned to work with a large group of youth at the home of a certain sister, cleaning up years of accumulated garbage and scrap metal. It was back-breaking work, but our youth worked willingly and tirelessly. Apparently this sister had been meeting with the Jehovah Witness missionaries for the previous few weeks, and they happened to come while we were working on the property. The message the Jehovah Witnesses had hoped to deliver concerned love and service. The sister remarked, “Would you like to see love and service in action?” and she then led the Witnesses out to see all our Latter-day Saint youth hard at work. “These young people are from Sandy, Utah”, she continued, “and have come down here to clean up my yard, without pay and without knowing me beforehand. That’s love, that’s service.” The Witnesses agreed and left without further discussion. Our hearts were warmed as the sister recounted this experience to us.
