Wall builders — 1990
During August of 1990, the youth in our ward carried out a wonderful service project. We sought and gained approval from Sandy City to build a decorative wall at the west entrance to Willow Creek. On a beautiful morning, we gathered large rocks from all over the area, met at the corner of Highland Drive and Alta Canyon Drive, and proceeded to build a nice rock wall as an entry marker to our area. We had laid a solid concrete foundation, using rebar, and we tied all the rocks in with embedded wire. A friendly spirit of competition developed between the two teams working on the two sections of the wall. It was grueling work under a scorching sun, but we all had a wonderful feeling of accomplishment at the completion. We also planted trees, laid sod, and installed a sprinkling system. We enclosed a time capsule in the wall which we will open on October 10, 2020 at 10:10 am. I hope to be alive to participate in the great unveiling. (Added note: I was indeed alive to participate in the opening of the time capsule, and I have included a report of the event later in my journal. Due to the widespread effect of the COVID-19 viral epidemic in 2020, the time capsule opening was delayed until Saturday, October 9, 2021.)
