Callings are blessings — 1989
As a bishopric, we had a humbling yet rewarding experience in January 1989 as we extended a call to a relatively new member of our ward. Due to this brother’s recent reactivation in the Church, we hesitated for several months to call him to a position in the ward, fearing that we would overwhelm or alienate him. In one of our bishopric meetings, a suggestions was made that we call him as an assistant Deacons’ quorum advisor and assistant Scoutmaster. When we issued the call, he responded, “Why have you waited so long to give me an opportunity to serve?” He enthusiastically accepted the call, and went on to serve magnificently in the troop and quorum. He developed a wonderful relationship with the boys, and they in turn had a wonderful impact on his’s life. It was a glorious thing to watch, and we all learned a beautiful lesson about the importance of service.
