Temple recommend — 1991

A faithful member of our Willow Creek Stake High Council related a touching story of a faithful LDS brother in Southern California who developed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease) while in his fifties.  His condition deteriorated over several months until he eventually was bedridden, unable to move any part of his body except his eyelids.  Through a method of communication using blinks, he told his wife that he wanted to renew his temple recommend which was about to expire.  Both his wife and his bishop told him that this probably wasn’t necessary, as he would not be able to go to the temple, due to the seriousness of his condition.  He persisted and communicated, “I know I will soon die, and I can’t bear the thought of meeting my Savior without a current temple recommend.”  His bishop promptly renewed his recommend and helped him make arrangements for a member of the Stake Presidency to come and complete the recommend interview process.
