Our sweet little Steven comes home — 1991

The third week of June, 1991, was another “red letter”, never-to-be-forgotten week in our lives.  We received word from our adoption attorney that a baby boy might soon come to our home.  We were told that he was 10 weeks old, healthy, fair-complexioned, and very much in need of love and attention.  We offered countless prayers during the next several days, beseeching the Lord to allow this precious soul to come into our lives, and vowing to provide every physical, emotional, and spiritual need this little boy might have.  Friday we were told the situation “looked good”, Saturday that things were “very promising”, Sunday that we should begin to “make arrangements”, Monday morning (June 24) to “be ready to come immediately when called”.  Monday afternoon, after waiting all morning on pins and needles, Susan answered a knock at the door to find our attorney holding our new little son, Steven Michael Taylor.  Our attorney had decided to bring the baby to our home immediately after the relinquishment papers had been signed and legally registered, for which we were so grateful.  Susan called me at the hospital, and we cried and laughed and celebrated this glorious event over the phone.  I had to endure six more very long hours in the operating room before I could finally leave and see our new little boy.  The news had spread quickly, and half the ward had seen Steven before I did.  This sweet little soul immediately captured our hearts and our love.  He was very fair, with blue eyes and a small amount of blond hair.  He was so much in need of love and hugs and attention, all of which we provided in generous amounts.  He soon developed a sparkle in his eyes, a beautiful dimpled smile, and a captivating laugh.  He responded wonderfully to Susan’s marvelous mothering skills and his sibling’s constant attention.  Within just a few days his weight soared, his cheeks reddened, his countenance shone, and his cheerful little personality became evident.  He was then and continues to be content, placid, and even-tempered.  How we love this sweet little boy, and thank the Lord every day for sending him to us and immeasurably blessing our lives thereby.
