Respect and Reverence — 1987
I witnessed a beautiful teaching moment in November of 1987 while serving as First Counselor in the Young Men’s Presidency of our ward. Brother ________, a sweet, spiritual man, was serving as Young Men’s President, and we were holding a youth activity in his home. We had about 80 youth attending that evening, and they were very boisterous and rowdy as we were attempting to start the activity. The person conducting was yelling above the tumult to try and achieve order. At this point, Brother _______ strode to the front of the group, asked for their attention, and said, “We as a family work diligently to invite and keep the Spirit of the Lord in our home. Your conduct tonight is making it hard for the Spirit to be in our home. Would you all be considerate enough to help us in maintaining a spirit of reverence and spirituality in our home?” Needless to recount, the rest of the evening was much different than the beginning.
