Provo Surgical Center — 1992
The summer of 1992 brought a great blessing into my life and the life of my family. I was able to leave my job at Alta View Hospital and join Gerald Hayward and Kenny Ashby as a third anesthesiologist at the Provo Surgical Center, which is a same-day surgery center. I had known Dr. Hayward, my Aunt Margaret’s brother, for several years and had tried to foster my friendship with him in hopes that he would eventually consider me when it came time to add a partner to their group. My waiting and patience (at times, impatience) paid off, and I was absolutely thrilled to accept this position. Words are inadequate to describe how wonderful this change was: the people at the Center were wonderful to accept me, and the work environment was wholesome, clean and efficient. I missed the friends I had made at Alta View Hospital, but how great it was to not carry a beeper, never deal with emergencies, never take call, never work Saturdays or Sundays, never work at night, to work with primarily healthy patients, to sleep through the night every night, etc. I took a 20% drop in income to make this job change, but I did so gladly in order to improve my life style and to be home at night. I didn’t realize how good life could be without a beeper strapped to my hip. I truly believe the Lord intervened in my behalf to save my sanity, because the night work and the call at the Women’s Center was exacting a dear price from my emotional well-being. I will always be indebted to Drs. Hayward and Ashby for giving me this great opportunity.
