Three young men and a sobering lesson —  1989

I recall an unplanned and unexpected experience in which three young priesthood holders learned a poignant lesson.   This event occurred during the time I was serving as Second Counselor in our bishopric in Sandy.  I was shopping in a grocery store near our home in Sandy, and as I was moving down an aisle, I could see in the distance three of the Deacons from our ward with their backs toward me.  It was obvious that they were looking at a magazine, as they were standing in front of a large magazine rack.  As I drew near, I could see that they were looking at pornographic pictures in a sleazy magazine.  I soon was standing quietly behind them, undetected. I softly said,  “Good afternoon, Brethren.”  The magazine was quickly closed, and three very pale faces turned toward me.  To be quite frank, I cannot remember what conversation, if any, ensued at that point.  I do know, however, that from then on, those three young men and myself were more acutely aware of being “witnesses of God at all times, and in all things, and in all places”, even while standing in front of a magazine rack in a grocery store.
