Oreo cookies and missionary service — January of 1988
My nephew, Gary, left for his mission to Australia in January 1988, and his departure at the airport, as expected, was an emotional and tearful event. John, who was 4 years old at the time, provided us all with some comic relief. A friend of Gary’s brought him a large package of Oreo cookies to eat on the plane. John’s eyes widened in awe, and he asked, “Dad, do all missionaries get Oreo cookies when they leave?” When jokingly told that they do, he made up his mind on the spot that he was going to serve a mission. For weeks, John reminded us about having plenty of Oreo cookies ready for him as the time for missionary service approached.
