President and Sister Eugene C. Ludwig — 1987

Early in 1987, Eugene C. Ludwig, my wonderful New Zealand South mission president, passed away.  He was a sweet, gentle man with unbounded love for all.  Sister Ludwig had a very hard time during the first few months after President Ludwig passed away.  Sister Ludwig shared the following experience with me at a missionary reunion in 1988.  One particular week in October 1987 was exceptionally hard and discouraging for Sister Ludwig, during which she could find no peace, feel no happiness, and she shed many tears of frustration.  She felt very alone and was having trouble settling the recent medical bills and trying to get her financial situation stabilized.  Finally, in desperation, she fell to her knees and cried out in prayer, “How can I do all this myself?  How can I carry on?  I need Eugene!”  At that moment, she felt a consoling hand on her shoulder and the words came into her mind, “You can do it.  All will be well.”  Sister Ludwig told me that she knew it was President Ludwig’s presence, and, from that experience, she received the reassurance that she needed to carry on.
