Anne’s baptismal day — 1991
Anne’s baptism day in March of 1991 was a day of faith and love in our home. During the months preceding Anne’s baptism, she had decided that she wanted to be baptized on her mother’s birthday, March 30. We had been able to make these arrangements, but Susan became very ill during the two weeks prior to the 30th. She was experiencing terrible abdominal pain and protracted nausea, and she had to be hospitalized just a few days before Anne’s scheduled baptism date. We fasted and prayed for Susan, imploring Heavenly Father to help Susan feel well enough to attend the baptismal service. I went to the hospital early on the morning of the 30th and found Susan in great distress and discomfort. Her doctor said that she would not be able to attend the service. I returned home with the sad news. Anne was heartbroken, and quickly went to her room. We went ahead with our plans for the day, gloomy at the thought of Susan missing the baptism. Not long before the services were to begin, Susan called me from the hospital and said that she was feeling much better and had been given medical clearance to attend the services. We quickly finished our preparations, sped to the hospital to pick up Susan, and hastened to the stake center. Susan attended the services in her robe, with an IV in her hand, and sitting in a wheelchair. The service was a spiritual event, and how happy we were to see Susan there, even though she was pale and weak.
It was not until a few weeks later that Anne shared the following with us. When I returned from the hospital with the news that Susan would not be able to attend the services, Anne retired to her bedroom, knelt down, and prayed sincerely to her Heavenly Father, pleading with Him to help her mother feel well enough to attend. I have no doubt that it was the faith of a humble 8-year girl that brought this miracle to pass. “…and a child shall lead them.”
