An angel comes to our home  —  August of 1986

August 25, 1986, was one of those “sensational” days that come along all too infrequently.  We received a call from our adoption attorney informing us that a beautiful little girl had been born in Boise, Idaho on August 23rd and that she was coming to our family!  We would have loved a baby of either gender, but Susan and I had both privately yearned for another sweet little girl and our prayers were answered.  With tears of joy in our eyes and gratitude in our hearts, we made our preparations to drive to Boise.  After driving for eight hours to get there, we spent two nail-biting hours at the apartment of the attorney’s sister while she went to pick up our little treasure at the hospital.  Words are inadequate to express the overwhelming joy we felt when we first saw our sweet little Janie with her strawberry-blond hair, fair skin, and pug-nose, bundled up and sleeping peacefully in her car seat.  I have heard many women express that the rigors of a pregnancy, labor, and delivery serve as a catalyst for their bonding process with their baby, but Susan and I needed no such catalyst — we knew and felt overwhelmingly and immediately that this little angel was meant for the Taylor family and that she was OUR baby.  Annie was thrilled with and overly-protective of her new little sister.  After heartfelt thanks to the attorney and a pleasant lunch, we headed home, our physical fatigue being overridden by our unbounded joy and thanksgiving.  Janie slept soundly during most of the eight hour trip home, which unfortunately was not an accurate indicator of her subsequent sleeping habits.  What a blessed and happy day!
