A beautiful conversion — September of 1986

I had the blessing of witnessing and participating in a wonderful missionary experience and conversion in 1986 and 1987.  While living in the Monument Park 2nd Ward, I was assigned to home teach a young man who worked as a sheriff for the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s’ Department.  During the time that I home taught this good young man, he met and married a beautiful young lady who was not a member of the Church and had come to Salt Lake City to work and ski.  She was from New York and her family violently protested her marriage to a “Mormon”, and they snubbed her new husband.  Initially, this young couple was reticent to discuss the church during our home teaching visits, but gradually we began to have frank discussions concerning our church and the young woman’s feelings toward it.  In concert with the ward missionaries, we persuaded this fine young woman to receive the discussions.  Her testimony blossomed and she became a regular attender at our meetings.  At about that time we moved to our new home in Sandy.  In April of 1987 I received a sweet note from this young woman, asking me to speak at her baptismal service in June.  I was thrilled beyond description.  The spirit was exceptionally strong at the baptismal service, and what a beautiful moment it was to watch my friend baptize his wife and to see them embrace immediately afterwards, tears flowing freely from both and eternal love being expressed.  “How great shall be your joy”.
