A very “interesting” piano teacher — 1960

AN INTERESTING PIANO TEACHER — 1960

As a young boy, I had a small taste of how Latter-day Saints were oftentimes viewed by outsiders.  I remember a very stern piano teacher that my mother hired to teach Linda and me the piano.  She would come to our home once a week for our piano lessons.  Early on in our involvement with her, my mother explained to her that she wanted her children, especially her son, to learn to play Latter-day Saint hymns from our hymn book.  It became readily apparent that this teacher had other plans.  She carefully scoured the pages of our hymn book and found all the hymns that were also Protestant or Catholic hymns.  Those were the only hymns she would assign me for my practice.  I learned hymns such as “A Mighty Fortress”, “All Creatures of Our God and King”, and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”.  “Praise To The Man”, “We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet”, and “O How Lovely was the Morning” never appeared on my practice roster!
