The Oakland California Temple — 1964

I had the sweet privilege of going to the open house for the Oakland California Temple when I was a young boy growing up in Reno.  The Oakland Temple was dedicated in November of 1964, so the open house was probably in September or October of that same year. I would have been 12 years old at the time, and this would have been shortly before we left Reno and moved to American Fork.  I remember that our ward, the Mount Rose Second Ward, had rented a bus for all of us that were going to the open house, and I sat with my mother on the very front row, opposite the driver of the bus. I remember walking around the grounds of that magnificent edifice, but I specifically remember that we were able to walk on a portion of the roof of the temple and look at the beautiful view of the San Francisco bay.  How blessed I was to be the son of two wonderful, covenant-path parents who loved the Church and the Savior, and their love was reflected in the experiences they helped us children have in their home.  How grateful I am for their righteous influence and example in my life over the years. I was truly blessed to be their son.
