– Good Samaritans in Beaver, Utah – October 2007 –
In late October of 2007, I drafted the following letter and sent it to the local newspaper in Beaver, Utah. The letter tells it all:
Dear Beaver Press,
I would like to recount a recent experience I had in Beaver, in hopes that you will print it in your newspaper.
Last weekend our family traveled from Provo to St. George. At about 8 pm, we stopped for gasoline at the High Country Chevron in Beaver, located at 1392 North 300 West. After re-fueling my Suburban, it would not start. I am very NON-mechanical, and had no idea what was wrong with the car. I went into the Chevron convenience store, and met Patti, who was very willing to help me. She immediately got on the phone and called her friend, Tom, who owns Tom’s Auto Repair. Even though it was late at night and he was involved in other things, Tom immediately drove over to the Chevron, willing to help me get my car running. While we were waiting for Tom, Patti suggested I ask two local men who had just driven into the station if they would be willing to give my car a jump, thinking the battery might be dead. These two “Good Samaritans” immediately came to my rescue. They gave me a jump, diagnosed a very loose battery lead, used their own tools to correct the problem, and had my car running within minutes. Tom had arrived by this time, and also was willing and anxious to get me back on the road.
I was overwhelmed by the willingness of the good citizens of Beaver to help someone in need. No one asked for payment, no one seemed inconvenienced, everyone was gracious and helpful. I have no doubt that this spirit of giving and friendship and service is very much a part of the community of Beaver, as demonstrated by these four very wonderful citizens that helped me out of a terrible situation.
You can rest assured that High Country Chevron will be my re-fueling station every time I travel through southern Utah, and Patti, Tom, and two very unselfish Beaver men will always be remembered and appreciated by my family.
