—  Grand Canyon Colorado River river run —  June 1977 —

In June of 1977 I had a remarkable and unforgettable experience.  I went on a river run down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona.  I went with a group of friends from the Emergency Room at Utah Valley Hospital where I worked.  The Cross brothers were our raftsmen.  We started our float trip at Lee’s Ferry, Arizona, and the trip is almost impossible to adequately describe on paper.  Every hour was filled with exhilarating and fun-filled experiences.  The outstanding events of the trip were the times we went through monstrous rapids such as Lava Falls, Hermit, Grapevine, etc.  I always sat near the back of the raft and my stomach would be in my throat as we would drop down the tongue of the rapid and into the white water.  We ate well, enjoyed good company, had mud fights, swam in the warm Little Colorado River, and saw some remarkable Indian ruins.  The trip lasted eight days, and it was a tremendous experience.  I came back tan, sore, tired, and happy.
