Post-mission decisions — 1973

— Post-mission decisions — 1973

I returned from my mission on May 27th, 1973.  I met Deanna, Glen, and Linda in San Francisco, where they had been vacationing, and then we all flew home to Utah together.  It was an indescribable thrill to see my parents and family again.  The airport employees had put up a barrier beyond which family and friends were not supposed to pass, but when my Dad saw me exiting off the plane, he bolted past the barrier and ran out on the tarmac to hug and greet me.  It was wonderful to greet my Grandfather and Grandmother Taylor also.  There was a huge sign saying “Welcome Home, Michael” to greet me when we arrived at our house.

During the next few weeks, I reported to my stake president, President Leland Priday, and to the High Council, gave my homecoming Sacrament Meeting talk, and tried to settle into civilian life.  I didn’t have much trouble getting used to my new schedule.  It was a challenge to live with my parents again, but I soon settled into my post-mission course.  I struggled somewhat as I sought the best educational course for the coming months, but soon, with the wonderful advice of my father, set my sights on attending Brigham Young University again and moving toward a career in dentistry or medicine.  I was so grateful for my father’s sage advice and counsel.  He helped me realize that I needed to set my occupational goals high and get into something that would enable me to do what I wanted in life and not be worried about where the next dollar was coming from.

I enrolled at Brigham Young University for the Fall semester of 1973, desiring to become a dentist or a doctor.   The wise counsel of my parents once again steered me towards success and productivity.
