Bishop journal — My ordination as Bishop of the Grandview 19th YSA Ward

November 2003

MY ORDINATION AS BISHOP, November 2003

I was ordained a bishop and set apart as the bishop of the Grandview 19th (Young Single Adult) Ward on November 23, 2003.  I was set apart by my wonderful stake president, President Wayne E. Francom.  Following are some of the items mentioned in my setting-apart and the blessing that accompanied the setting-apart.

President Francom first ordained me to the office of bishop and set me apart as the President of the Aaronic Priesthood in our ward.  He then set me apart as the Bishop of the Grandview 19th Ward in the Provo Utah Grandview Stake.

He blessed me with the following:

  • The keys and rights of a bishop
  • The keys of serving as a common judge in Israel
  • An abundance of the spirit during my service in this calling
  • The ability to perform in this calling
  • An intense desire to serve
  • A desire to know the Lord’s will
  • Discernment
  • The ability to counsel and to share wisdom
  • The time and capacity to fulfill all my duties
  • Understanding
  • An ability to lead the young people in positive directions

He then counseled me to do the following:

  • Remember that my primary calling is that of father
  • Remember that I have been blessed with a supportive wife and good children
  • Consult with my wife concerning family matters
  • Lean on my wife for support
  • Keep private ward matters private
  • Use my wonderful counselors wisely and to delegate responsibilities to them in abundance
  • Move the work forward
  • Share my talents with the ward
