Smith as President of the Church in November of 1918, but he was not sustained in that position by the general membership of the Church until June 1919.  This delay was due to the world-wide influenza epidemic which prevented the Saints meeting in a general conference until June.  President Grant was the son of Jedediah Morgan Grant, also an apostle.
