He served as a General Authority Seventy from April 3, 2021 until his call as apostle. He served as the President of the BYU Pathway Program, and also as President of BYU-Idaho. He also served as Commissioner of Church Education. He served as a young missionary in Japan from 1989 to 1991. He obtained a B.A. from Brigham Young University, an M.A. from Stanford University, and a D.B.A. from Harvard University. He married Christine Calder in 1994 and they are the parents of eight children.
