Personal Life Journal — May 2025

  • May 2025 —  Dayna, Haylie, and myself made a long car trip to attend the funeral services for our sweet Aunt Leah.  We left Provo on Thursday, May 15, 2025 and traveled most of the day to arrive at Nevada City, California.  We attended the services that next Friday.  The services were held in the LDS chapel in Nevada City, which our Uncle John helped to build many decades ago.  It was a joy and a delight to visit with our ten cousins, the children of Leah and John.  I hadn’t seen most of them for several decades.  The services were sweet, a fitting tribute to a very Christ-like and saintly woman.  She had devoted her life to serving her children, family, and friends.  She had 10 children, 56 grandchildren, and almost 100 great-grandchildren.  Incredibly, a daughter-in-law of Rodney (one of Leah’s younger sons) went into labor early on Friday morning there in Nevada City and went to a nearby hospital to have her baby, with the birth being on May 16th, the day of Leah’s funeral services.  Corey, the youngest of Leah’s children, spoke during the services and he related a remarkable story about Elder Quentin L. Cook, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve.  Elder Cook had recently come to preside over their stake conference in Boise, Idaho.  As Elder Cook concluded his final remarks, he said the following: “Brothers and sisters, I want you to know that I know the voice of the Lord.  I also want you to know that I know the face of the Lord.”  Corey reported how meaningful and moving this testimony was to all present.
  • May 2025 — As mentioned above, there were so many great and wonderful things about our trip to California to honor our sweet Aunt Leah as she was laid to rest.  There were, however, several things about the trip that were anything but great and wonderful.  I do not want to dwell on the negative, but will simply mention a few things so that I will remember them going forward.  I learned some interesting lessons from these issues and events: 1) the geography and street layout of certain California town  2) the ambience and condition of a certain motel  3) insects found where they should not have been found  4) an unimaginable confrontation unexpectedly witnessed  5) the over-the-top purchase of food products  6) the long, arduous drive  7) an hour-long, bumper-to-bumper freeway nightmare  8) an all-night ‘white noise’ experience.
