Mothers of our living prophets
Mothers of our prophets who lived to see their sons serve as prophets or apostles
- The only mother of a church president who was alive during her son’s service as President is Lucy Mack Smith, mother of the Prophet Joseph. Joseph was martyred in 1844 and Lucy Smith died in 1856.
- Eight of the mothers of our church presidents were alive when their sons were ordained apostles. These eight are:
- Lucy Mack Smith (Joseph Smith) — Lucy was 55 years old in 1830 when Joseph was named as ‘apostle’. She passed away in 1856.
- Agnes Taylor (John Taylor) — Agnes was 51 years old in 1838 when John was ordained an apostle. She passed away in 1868.
- Rachel Ridgeway Ivins Grant (Heber J. Grant) — Rachel was 61 years old in 1882 when Heber J. was ordained an apostle. She passed away in 1909.
- Sarah Farr Smith (George Albert Smith) — Sarah was 54 years old in 1903 when George was ordained an apostle. She passed away in 1921.
- Julina Lambson Smith (Joseph Fielding Smith) — Julina was 61 years old in 1910 when Joseph was ordained an apostle. She passed away in 1936.
- Louisa Emeline Bingham Lee (Harold B. Lee) — Louisa was 62 years old in 1941 when Harold was ordained an apostle. She passed away in 1959.
- Nellie Marie Rasmussen Hunter (Howard W. Hunter) — Nellie was 74 years old in 1959 when Howard was ordained an apostle. She passed away in 1971
- Gladys Condie Monson (Thomas S. Monson) — Gladys was 61 years old in 1963 when Thomas was ordained an apostle. She passed away in 1973.
