The Welfare and Humanitarian programs of the Church of Jesus Christ — Section 50

Is there Biblical support for your welfare plan?

Representative of a Christian church:
I understand that the Church of Jesus Christ has the largest welfare program of all the various Christian churches.  That effort is to be applauded, but is there Biblical support for your program?

Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
There is much scriptural support for our welfare efforts, but I believe that Matthew 25:34-40 is the most beautiful account.  In this account, Christ made a statement about those who had given meat to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, a home to the stranger, clothing to the naked, association to the sick, and fellowship to the prisoner.  Referring to the day of judgement, Christ said, “Come ye blessed of my Father, for verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”   I would be remiss if I did not mention a beautiful passage from the Book of Mormon in which an inspired king by the name of Benjamin makes this wonderful pronouncement, “…I would that ye should impart of your substance to the poor, every man according to that which he hath, such as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and administering to their relief, both spiritually and temporally, according to their wants.  And see that all these things are done in wisdom and order, for it is not requisite that a man should run faster than he has strength.”  (Mosiah 4:26-27)
