Lengthy father’s blessings? — August of 1999
Following is a humorous event that occurred in our family in August of 1999. We submitted this cute story to the Church News “On The Bright Side” section. It is written as if Susan is telling the story.
Our family has a tradition, as do many Latter-day Saint families, of having each school-aged child receive a father’s blessing as that child starts a new school year. Typically, my husband gives the blessings on the Sunday evening preceding the Monday that the new school year commences. This past August, we had three sons who were to start in the 4th, 3rd, and 1st grades, respectively. Our two older sons, James and Steven, were to start school one week ahead of our 1st grader, so they received their blessings a week before our youngest son, Mark. Mark watched and listened as his older brothers received their somewhat lengthy father’s blessings. The next Sunday evening, as we prepared for Mark’s blessing, he resolutely said to his father, “Dad, would you please make my blessing a short one? I don’t want to be late for school tomorrow!”
