An answer to prayer — 1997
In August of 1997, a very mundane task turned into a faith-promoting experience. I needed a short piece of rebar for a Scout project I was working on. I needed it quite urgently because I couldn’t proceed with my project without it. I remembered that several months prior to this time I had thrown a piece of rebar out into the vacant lot adjoining our home. The lot was now covered with deep weeds. Knowing that my chance of finding this rebar was very remote, I nevertheless walked out into the weeds and hoped that I might get lucky. I searched in vain for two or three minutes. At that point I quietly bowed my head and offered a brief prayer, saying words to this effect: “Father, I know this is a trivial matter, but I would be so grateful for divine help in locating this piece of rebar. I am trying to magnify my calling and do my best for our Scout troop. Please bless me as I look for this needed piece of metal.” I ended my prayer, took 2 or 3 steps out into a bunch of weeds and stepped right on the piece of rebar. The rebar was completely covered by weeds. I would have never seen it or found it if I hadn’t stepped directly on it. Happenstance? Luck? I prefer to think that Heavenly Father heard the prayer of a very weak but perhaps deserving servant and rewarded the small bit of faith I exercised that day.
