Mount Timpanogos Temple Dedication —  1996

The older members of our family had a glorious experience on Sunday, October 12, 1996.  We were able to attend the cornerstone laying and initial dedicatory session for the Mt. Timpanogos Temple, presided over and conducted by President Gordon B. Hinckley.  We witnessed the session via closed-circuit television in a Stake Center here in Provo.  We all needed a special temple recommend issued by the Bishop and a pass in order to attend.

The spirit was strong as we watched this sacred meeting. Accompanying President Hinckley were Presidents Thomas S. Monson and James E. Faust, as well as Elder Boyd K. Packer.  President Hinckley was both witty and yet spiritual, expressing deep and sincere thanks for this marvelous building.  President Hinckley was especially witty as they went outside for the cornerstone setting.  He asked several persons if they “wanted to put on some mud”, referring to the mortar.  He invited several children to come forward and “dab on some mud” as well.

The dedicatory prayer was inspirational and touching.  The Hosanna shout was moving, as we all waved white handkerchiefs and reverently shouted “Hosanna”.  The spirit was strong; our family realized that we might only have this one opportunity to participate in a temple dedication, and we were grateful for this privilege.
