“Pure Religion” luncheon —  1995

What a wonderful experience our extended family had on October 18, 1995. My father-in-law had just recently completed a book on the history of the Church welfare program entitled “Pure Religion”, which had been commissioned by the First Presidency.  In honor of Elder Rudd and the book, the First Presidency hosted a luncheon and invited not only Elder and Sister Rudd, but also their children and their spouses.  The luncheon was held at the Lion House in downtown Salt Lake City  and the following dignitaries were there: the First Presidency, consisting of Presidents Gordon B. Hinckley, Thomas S. Monson, and James E. Faust, Apostles Russell M. Nelson and Joseph B. Wirthlin, the First Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, and Sisters Elaine Jack and Chieko Okazaki.  We all had the privilege of being seated at a table with a dignitary, and Susan and I had the great privilege of sitting right next to President Monson.  He kept us entertained during the entire lunch with interesting stories from his years of experience in the Church, his stories being both uplifting and entertaining.  Each of the Presidency gave a brief tribute to Elder Rudd, with President Monson’s being especially touching and heartfelt due to the long friendship that he has had with Elder Rudd.  What a blessing it is to be a member of the Rudd family, and to be a member of the true and living Church of Jesus Christ!
