Calculations and miscellaneous facts
• Formula for the average weight of a child: (age x 2) + 9 = the 50th percentile weight of a child in kilograms (up to age 14)
• For newborns: the average newborn is 3 kg; add 0.5 kg for each month up to age 1
• Operating room ventilation with laminar airflow showed no benefit and was associated with a significantly higher risk for severe surgical site infections after hip prosthesis surgery
• kilograms = (pounds / 2) – (10% of pounds / 2)
• pounds = (kilograms x 2) + (10% of kilograms x 2)
• IBW (ideal body weight) = (height in centimeters) – 100
• BMI (body mass index) = kilograms / ((height in meters) ^ 2 )
• BMI > 30 is considered morbid obesity
