An unusual confirmation — 1986
I smile and chuckle whenever I recollect a hilarious incident that occurred when we lived in the Monument Park 2nd Ward. At the time, I was home teaching a wonderful family that lived across the street from us. The time had arrived for their oldest son to be baptized and confirmed, and my friend asked me to participate in the confirmation. The confirmation took place in Fast and Testimony meeting, with 8 or 9 brethren standing in the circle. We all placed our hands on the young boy’s head and his father, with dignity and reverence, began the blessing. Shortly thereafter, I noticed that the boy was beginning to slump and slide down in the chair. Initially, I thought he was sliding due to the weight of our hands on his head, but I soon realized that he was intentionally sliding further and further down in his chair. The father, unscathed, continued with the eloquent and spiritual blessing. Soon all of us in the circle were leaning down considerably in order to keep our hands on the young boy’s head. His father seemed oblivious to this distraction as the inspired words continued to flow. By the end of the blessing, the boy was essentially laying with his back on the seat of the chair, with his face staring up at all of our hands, and all of us in the circle were leaning precariously to maintain contact with his head. I was proud of the brethren in the circle, for not one giggle, snicker, or snort escaped our lips. There were, however, many broad smiles as the blessing ended due to the mischievousness of this future missionary.
