— Anesthesia preceptorship — November 1979 —
During November and December of 1979, I had the great fortune of doing an anesthesia preceptorship with Dr. Gerald Hayward at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo. This was during my junior year of medical school. Dr. Hayward is a shirttail relative, being the brother of my Aunt Margaret, Uncle Bruce Taylor’s wife. I had a delightful time and was exposed to many of the basics of anesthesia, including intubation, bag and mask use, anesthetic medications, intravenous line placement, ventilator use, etc. Dr. Hayward was a delight to work with, and his influence played a role in my decision to specialize in anesthesia. I was also grateful that I had developed a friendship with Dr. Hayward when I began seeking a job at the Provo Surgical Center many years later, as he worked there and played a role in my obtaining the position at Provo Surgical.
