Temple doubts
by Bishop Greg Adams, Grandview 1st Ward
Bishop Adams gave good counsel on how to help those who feel their temple experiences are less than they anticipated. These thought were present on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
- Attend vs. receive — There is a big difference between ‘attending’ the temple and ‘receiving’ the temple truths. We need to go with the attitude that I am going to feel something, embrace something, receive and absorb spiritual direction and enlightenment. I will not just ‘be in’ the temple.
- Read vs. search — We can’t just ‘read’ the scriptures or ‘hear’ the temple covenants. We need to search, ponder, absorb, pray about, and internalize the teachings and ordinances we participate in.
- Keep vs. obey — We can’t just ‘keep’ the commandments; we need to obey the commandments explicitly, diligently, precisely, with a love and gratitude for the privilege of following the Savior. To ‘keep’ means to have, but ‘obey’ means to conform.
- Enter vs. expect — We must do more than just ‘enter’ the temple; we must go with the ‘expectation’ that the temple is going to enter us.
- Individual vs. societal — Temple attendance is a personal and private experience with the Savior and with Heavenly Father. It is much more than a ward or group activity to fulfill a quota.
