Mistakes and Misspellings in the LDS Edition of the Standard Works

. . .This interesting information was contributed by numerous LDS Gems subscribers. Some of these mistakes have been corrected in the more recent editions of the Standard Works. These errors are presented with a spirit of curiosity, not a spirit of criticism or censure. Considering the prodigious amount of material presented in the Standard Works, it is amazing that so few miscues are to be found. I hasten to add that the version of the scriptures I am using is an older edition.  Some or all of these inaccuracies might have been corrected in subsequent printings.  I welcome any interesting or unusual information dealing with the scriptures at  [email protected].

Mistakes and Misspellings in the LDS Standard Works

  • Luke — The word ‘sinner’ is misspelled as ‘sinnner’.
  • 1 Peter 4:6 — In the footnotes for this verse, the ‘e’ superscript references D&C 137:24. There are only 10 verses in this Section 137. From the context of the
verse, it would appear that ‘e’ should reference D&C 137:9. (Daniel Reese)  Steve Derocher has also provided the following insight concerning this verse:  “I must point out that many scriptures that are cross-referenced are done quite literally; they are ‘crossed’ with the other reference, referencing back to itself. Daniel Reese proposed that D&C 137:9 should have been the correction. However, I believe it to be D&C 138:34, which not only references 1 Peter 4:6 in footnote ‘a’, but literally deals with the subject matter of that verse. See also D&C 138:6a which also references 1 Peter 4:6.
  • Topical Guide (page 80) — Under ‘Covenants’, the reference for D&C 109:68 should have the word ‘has’ rather than ‘was’. (Mark Matheson)
  • Topical Guide (page 100) — Steve Derocher pointed out the following printing error — on page 100 of the Topical Guide, fourth row of the right-hand column, the reference to 2 Cor should be in bold print, but it is not. All of the other book references are in bold.  Thanks, Steve.
  • Topical Guide (page 290) — Under ‘Light’, the reference for Ether 3:14 is incorrect.  Ether reads ‘In me shall all mankind have ‘LIFE’, not light.  (Submitted by Martin Glass)
  • Mosiah 10:10 — There is a footnote at the bottom of the page listed as 10a, but there is no ‘a’ in verse 10 to refer the reader to the footnote.
  • Alma 34 — In the introductory heading at the beginning of this chapter, the word ‘atonement’ is misspelled as ‘atonenent’.
  • Pronouncing Guide (page 532) — ‘Ammah’ is misspelled ‘Amnah’ (see Alma 20:2)
  • Pronouncing Guide (page 532) — ‘Ammonite’ is out of alphabetical order

  • Index (page 207) — ‘Lehi^4’ is listed as the son of ‘Helaman^2’ He is actually the son of Helaman^3. (Submitted by Paul Narula).
  • Index (page 247) — Under ‘Obedience, Obedient, Obey’, the reference Alma 57:20 should actually be Alma 57:21. (Andrew Crookston)
