 Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

    Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf is the 101st brother to be ordained an apostle in this dispensation. He was born on November 6, 1940 to Karl Albert and Hilde Else Opelt Uchtdorf in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. He married Harriet Reich on December 14, 1962 in the Swiss Temple.  Elder and Sister Uchtdorf have two children, Antje Evans and Guido, and they have five grandchildren.   Elder Uchtdorf has served in the Presidency of the Seventy, the First Quorum of the Seventy, the Second Quorum of the Seventy, and as a stake president on two occasions. He has also served as a stake mission president, a high councilor, a stake missionary, a counselor in an Elders’ Quorum presidency, and as a ward Young Men president.
    Elder Uchtdorf retired from Lufthansa German Airlines as a senior vice president for flight operations and chief pilot in 1995. He also served as a check and training captain for pilots of Boeing 747’s for Lufthansa. He held various management positions including head of airline pilot school, director of in-flight services, and head of cockpit crews for 15 years. He was employed as an airline pilot since 1970 and was chairman of flight operations committee for the International Air Transport Association.
    Elder Uchtdorf served in the German Air Force from 1959 to 1965. He received cadet training and his pilot wings at Big Springs, Texas and his fighter pilot training in Phoenix, Arizona.
    Elder Uchtdorf attended Business Administration School in Bremen, Germany. He also attended the International Management Institute in Lausanne, Switzerland.
